all of this is. on the heels of a nuclear prices in japan, south carolina here in the u.s. went to court demanding that the nuclear regulatory commission provide a permanent place to store america's waste. there are 104 operating reactors, they're scattered across 65 plants in 31 different states. if you take a look at this map, this gives you a better idea of exactly where this 63 thousand tons of spent fuel, the darker the color of the state, the more radioactive waste that state has, according to the nrc. again, we're talking about 63,000 tons of spent fuel. if you take a look, with the telestrator working, illinois is the state with most, 776 tons. coming in second place is pennsylvania. as we know, pennsylvania, the site of three mile island, the nuclear site that had zadisaste back in the late '80s. and 3,700 tons of spent fuel. pretty much a tie with north carolina and south carolina here. let me show you a map quickly that illustrates what we're talking about when we say spent fuel. these are the spent fuel pools. they're steel-lined concrete pools filled with water like

light from the u.s. supreme court today. the court decided 8-1 westborough baptist church had the right to protest outside of a maryland marine's funeral in 2006. and tom fitzgerald is live with more. fitz, he's reacting pretty strongly. >> reporter: yes, and there was nothing implyd about the decision. an 8-1 decision by the united states supreme court and albert snider said he is deeply disappointed in this ruling, which allows the westborough baptist church from kansas to go forward with these protests that they have mounted for several years now. the back story is this: matthew snider was a marine corporal who is killed in action in iraq. in 2006, the westborough baptist church out of kansas decided to picket snider's funeral as part of getting the message out of their preaching and words of the united states and the military forces were being punished by god because of the united states tolerance of homosexuality and robert snider would have none of that and took the westborough baptist church to court, suing them for violating his right to privacy. this case is argued in october b
